HMRC News for Payroll Software Users: Benefit charge for zero emission vans

HMRC has asked Carval to encourage our payroll software users to notify them of any employees who are impacted by the introduction of the van benefit charge that will apply to zero emission vans from 6 April 2015.

Full details of the charge are outlined in the policy paper which was published on 10 December 2014 tax-van-benefit-charge-for-zero-emission-vans.  The PAYE update issued in March 2014 provides an overview of the changes - PAYE Update March 2014

HMRC needs to ensure that any individual impacted by this change has the correct amount of van benefit charge in their tax code for the 2015/16 tax year.  Therefore, they are urging employers to email them (mailbox.zeroemissionvans@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk) in respect of any employees who will be impacted by this change.

  • Employers need to send HMRC the following information on any employees who are impacted by the change:
  • Employer name and contact details (Telephone number)
  • Employer PAYE reference
  • Employee name
  • Employee National Insurance number

The above information will enable HMRC to ensure that individual tax codes are updated for the 2015/16 tax year, minimise risk of underpayments and avoid the issue of multiple tax codes to employers. This is a temporary measure for 2015/16 only. From 2016/17 the van benefit charge will be reported as usual using the P11D.
